Growth of the Lamont Community
Over the decades, several families operated the community store — including Mr. Dawson, Mr. J.B. Hill, Mr. Eubanks, Mr. William Randolph, Babb Bros., Mr. Doc Cherry, Mr. Howard Cherry, Nancy Pearson and Freddie Cherry, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Cowan, Mr. and Mrs. Billy Munday, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Pope, and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Williams. The building tragically burned in 1985, and its remains still stand on the site today.
A post office was established in 1852 under the name Blackjack and continued until 1895. In 1896, the name was changed to Lamont in honor of Daniel Lamont, who served as Secretary in the cabinet of President Grover Cleveland. The Lamont post office operated until 1906, when mail service was transferred to Springfield. The post office, like much of early life in the area, was located in the community store.
